Quite lot of business people think that if your business or product website crashes under load, it means that you are doing lot of business and lot of people are interested in your site and product, however I think I disagree with these thoughts.I feel these are more of people’s curiosity and this at times might generate one time sale but more often they reflect poorly on the company brand and its ability to manage smooth sales process via online channels. So I suggest If you are in business and if you are selling product which is going to consumed by general mass consumers, then make sure that your online sales channels are strong enough to support your vision.
Here is case where solid idea to compare the performance of various hospitals across the country generated lot of traffic to the site and finally it crashed under load and disappointing many of the its users.
Below is extract pulled out from the link,
Unexpected high traffic crashed a new online hospitals rating tool.
The new website was launched Wednesday and the owners expected about 200 people to check it out.
But more than 300,000 people swamped the site a few hours after it went live and the server hosting it crashed.
The tool was developed by the Canadian Institute for Health Information and is found on the organization's website.
Agency official Jeremy Veillard says the site crash shows that people are interested.
The tool allows users to compare hospitals using 21 health-care quality measurements and nine financial ones.
CIHI expects the major benefit of the tool will be that it gives hospitals an incentive to improve their performances now that the public can see how they are doing.
Veillard also says studies around the world have shown these kinds of measurement tools don't change the decisions the public makes about health-care as most people just go to the closest hospital when they are sick.
